Damian Lillard: A Trailblazing Journey of Records and Achievements
The ‘Portland Trail Blazers’ were his first professional team. He scored 20 points and dished out 10 assists in his first NBA game, a loss to the Los Angeles Lakers. He shot a league-record seven three-pointers against the ‘Golden State Warriors,’ and his 19 points per game average helped him win the ‘NBA Rookie of the Year Award. At the ‘NBA All-Star’ weekend, he also triumphed in the ‘Taco Bell Skills Challenge.
While playing against the “Sacramento Kings” in his second season, he scored 41 points, a career-high, and set a new record for most points scored in a single quarter with 26. By the end of the season, he had earned a spot on the prestigious “All NBA Third Team,” a remarkable accomplishment for someone with only two seasons of NBA experience.
He set the record for most three-pointers made in a player’s first three seasons while having a below-average scoring average in his third year. He scored 43 points, a new career high, in a game against the ‘San Antonio Spurs.’ After stepping in for an injured Blake Griffin in the 2015 “NBA All-Star Game,” he became a household name.
In 2015, he inked a five-year, US$120 million deal with the ‘Trail Blazers.’ In only 247 games, he set a record as the “NBA’s” all-time leader in three-pointers made with 600. In addition, he took the least amount of games (248) to become the first ‘Trail Blazer’ to record 15,000 assists and 5,000 points.
After playing in 275 consecutive games, Lillard had to take time off to heal from a left foot injury. After missing six games due to injury, he made his return and scored his 2,000th career ‘NBA’ field goal against the ‘Washington Wizards.’ Later, against the ‘Golden State Warriors,’ he scored 51 points, setting a new ‘NBA’ record.
He established a new ‘NBA’ record by scoring at least 27 points in his team’s first five games of the 2016-2017 season. His 163 points through the first five games of the season are the most by any ‘Trail Blazer’ in a single season’s opening stretch.
After missing the first five games of the season with an ankle injury, he returned to become the 11th player in his team’s history to score 8,000 points in a career. He now shares that distinction with Michael Jordan and LeBron James. In April of 2017, he scored 49 points on 9-3 shooting and was named the “Western Conference Player of the Month.”
Lillard is fully recovered from the hamstring and calf injuries he sustained in January of 2018 and is ready to shatter records this year. He surpassed the previous record for fastest player to reach 10,000 points in Blazers history shortly after passing the 9,000-point mark.
