Does Chip Gaines Have Cancer

Chip Gaines, of Magnolia Homes, is reviving a social media challenge to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and giving his own hair to Children With Hair Loss in an effort to raise awareness and funds for childhood cancer research.

In “Operation Haircut Part 2,” Gaines will have Bailey, a 16-year-old former St. Jude patient, help him shave his head.

Bailey was first introduced to Chip and Joanna Gaines in 2017 when they visited him in the hospital. He had dozens of operations, including limb-sparing surgery, over the course of over a year. Today, he can say he has successfully defeated cancer.

According to the press release, Chip raised $230,000 on social media after donating his hair for the first time in 2017 as part of “Operation Haircut.” Gaines expects a similar result from this new test.

Tuesday, Richard C. Shadyac Jr., president and chief executive officer of ALSAC, a nonprofit that raises money and awareness for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, sent the following statement to 6 News:

For many years, Chip and Joanna Gaines have shown tremendous compassion and generosity toward the children of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Their ingenuity and kindness have resulted in a beautiful new dining room for families staying at St. Jude Target House and a garden playhouse for St. Jude children.” We owe a debt of gratitude to Chip and his many supporters, whose donations will define his new style. St. Jude’s commitment to never charging patients or their families has allowed the facility to become a global leader in the fight against deadly childhood diseases.

For example, in his essay “Time for New Rhythms,” Chip says, “My eyes were opened, yet again, to the racial inequities that still plague our society today.” Overwhelmed by how much I don’t know, I’ve spent the past few months listening and attempting to make sense of it all. Saddened by the length of the road ahead of us. Feeling completely defeated by the length of the road ahead of me.

Although Chip doesn’t “have solutions,” he’s still doing one thing: listening.

Just that I need to improve—all that’s I know,” he writes. “Improvement is essential.

This past June, Chip and his entire family of six appeared in Emmanuel Acho’s miniseries, Uncomfortable Conversations With a Black Man, which he starred in for the Philadelphia Eagles. While visiting the Gaines family, Acho made the following recommendation: “it’s important that we grow our kids to see colour, because there’s a beauty in colour and there’s a beauty in culture.”

At the end of his essay, Chip urges his fellow citizens to adopt “the rhythms of justice.”

When one rhythm is displaced and broken, another one takes its place. I can’t pretend to know how this will all turn out, but I do know this. Chip chimes in to confirm that this is indeed the how things in the world function. This time, let’s dance to the beat of mutual comprehension, fair treatment, optimistic anticipation, and loving commitment.
