A Goose-Goose-Duck-Like Future Is Among Us
Perhaps the most improbable success story in recent gaming history is Among Us, released in 2018. After a slow start, that multiplayer social deduction game became a smash hit and had a significant cultural impact. Recently, Among Us has been featured in Glass Onion, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez played it to a record audience on Twitch. Goose Goose Duck, a new multiplayer game, is trying to unseat the reigning king of the social deduction genre, Among Us, which is still as popular as ever.
Goose Goose Duck, like Among Us, was released a few years ago but has only recently begun to gain a significant audience. Just recently, the number of people playing Goose Goose Duck at once on Steam reached a record high of 563,677. That’s a huge sum on its own, but when you consider that it was enough to push Goose Goose Duck ahead of heavy hitters like Apex Legends and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, you have to wonder what the big deal is.
In that regard, you should be aware that Goose Goose Duck is essentially a more complex version of Among Us. In most rounds, a player leads a flock of geese to accomplish some goal. They’re looking for the duck among the players the whole time. Goose Goose Duck has a few unique features that set it apart from the vast majority of games in its genre, but anyone who has played Among Us will be able to pick it up and start playing with minimal training.

So, what’s with the sudden uptick in the popularity of Goose Goose Duck? This odd tale has its roots in the widespread popularity of the Korean pop group BTS.
V (Kim Taehyung) of BTS has recently begun live streaming Goose Goose Duck on the Weverse platform (you can find uploads of most of those streams on YouTube). Naturally, BTS fans didn’t wait long to give the game a try themselves, and it’s been fascinating to see the rise of Goose Goose Duck.
Back in October of last year, V began streaming more Goose Goose Duck. Shortly thereafter, the game saw a slight increase in concurrent players, but not enough to break Goose Goose Duck’s previous record. Only since December of last year has the game consistently drawn more than 130,000 players at once. It has obviously expanded since then.
I think that’s the most intriguing aspect of this game’s popularity. There is no denying that the meteoric rise of Goose Goose Duck is more of a reflection of BTS’ popularity than the game itself, but that is by no means the whole story. There has been a steady increase in the number of new players and long-term players in recent weeks and months.
One possible reason for this is that Goose Goose Duck not only provides a new (albeit obviously familiar) spin on the Among Us formula but also has the potential to do some things better than Among Us. Players of Goose Goose Duck, for instance, frequently comment favorably on the game’s wit, its wide selection of maps, and its many customizable settings and game modes. Goose Goose Duck provides an enjoyable social deduction experience if that’s your thing.
There are, however, a few things you should know before diving headfirst into the free-to-play game. To begin, it should come as no surprise that the servers behind Goose Goose Duck are currently feeling the strain. The game’s creators are aware of the problem and are hard at work on a fix, but they didn’t anticipate the game’s meteoric rise to fame. Additionally, gamers in China and Korea are currently the game’s largest demographic. So, it’s possible that some Western players will have trouble communicating with others due to language barriers. Private matches can be arranged if there are enough interested parties.
There’s a chance that the viral sensation Goose Goose Duck won’t last. Such a rapid decline after an initial period of success is not unprecedented. The rise of popularity of Goose Goose Duck, however, is strikingly similar to that of Among Us. We can’t say for sure that Goose Goose Duck won’t be one of 2023’s biggest surprise hits in an era when even the smallest titles can become a hit thanks to streaming platforms, social media, and YouTube.
