Almost ten years since the debut of Grand Theft Auto V, players are impatiently awaiting the game’s sixth installment.
Despite the extensive and widely reported leaks of gameplay and story details, the game has not yet been officially unveiled. As a result, there is no set a date for the project’s release.
Nevertheless, talk about the much-anticipated game has been rife with rumors and speculation. The latest word suggests we might get our hands on the game sooner rather than later.
Read on for the full lowdown on Grand Theft Auto 6, including the latest release date rumors, details on the game’s story, and more. While you wait for Rockstar’s newest, you might want to take advantage of some GTA 5 cheats or play some Saints Row.
Grand Theft Auto 6 Release Date
An official announcement regarding Grand Theft Auto 6’s release date has not yet been made. No one from Rockstar could comment on Jason Schreier, whose article in Bloomberg was widely read about the game.
The next Grand Theft Auto is expected to launch sometime in Take-2024 Two’s fiscal year (April 2023 – March 2024), according to a Bloomberg article, but developers are pessimistic.
Microsoft’s response to the UK Competition and Markets Authority investigation into acquiring Activision Blizzard read: “The highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI is expected to be released in 2024.”
The tweet below also shows the release date of GTA 6:
Rockstar Games is reportedly targeting a holiday 2024 release for Grand Theft Auto 6, or the release date could be pushed back to early 2025 at the most, according to a reliable insider.https://t.co/4qWWKz9Uho#GTA6 #GrandTheftAuto pic.twitter.com/9RJp6bPqMA

GamesRadar has uncovered a second rumor that suggests Grand Theft Auto 6 is nearing the end of its development cycle. Assuming the below tweet’s leaks are true, of course.
Given that it can take a year or more to polish a game (especially one as large as GTA 6), the latest rumors point towards a 2024 release date, lending credence to Microsoft’s assertion above.
Yet, we can’t say that with absolute assurance until we hear from the developer. Rumors should always be taken with a grain of salt.
Grand Theft Auto 6 leaks
The world has seen a substantial amount of gameplay footage from GTA 6’s early development stages thanks to massive leaks. Before being removed, the footage appeared to confirm the new female protagonist and show off some open-world gameplay.
In a statement, Rockstar confirmed the validity of the leaks and added that it is “extremely disappointed to have any details of our next game shared with you all in this way”. Despite the leak, though, Rockstar claims that its “work on the next Grand Theft Auto game will continue as planned”.
Thankfully, Grand Theft Auto 6 has not been delayed because of the leak and access of confidential Rockstar information. Rockstar will “properly introduce” us to the game “when it is ready,” so the release date should still hold.
GTA 6 Story Includes First Female Protagonist
What about Grand Theft Auto 6’s plot and characters? Bloomberg has you covered there, too.
The article states, “for the first time, according to people familiar with the game,” a female protagonist will be playable in GTA 6. The leaked early development footage of the game has now verified this.
The report goes on to note: “The woman, who is Latina, will be one of a pair of leading characters in a story influenced by the bank robbers Bonnie and Clyde.”
The report goes on to say, “Developers are also being cautious not to ‘punch down’ by making jokes about marginalized groups,” which is an indication of how the GTA tone may be updated in this installment.

For Which Systems Will Grand Theft Auto 6 Be Available?
We are confident that you can play GTA 6 on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, but whether or not it will make it to PS4 and Xbox One is still up in the air. After all, by the time GTA 6 is released, those old-school consoles may be hopelessly out of date.
While we can safely assume a Grand Theft Auto 6 PC release is in the works, it remains to be seen if the game will be ported to Nintendo’s Switch console. GTA 5 hasn’t been released on the Switch, including the Definitive Edition trilogy bundle. Once we have more information, we will share it with you.
