The 2017 season was the first for the Ducks under new head coach Willie Taggart. Before breaking his collarbone against Cal on September 30, 2017, Herbert led the Ducks to a 4-1 start while adjusting from the “Blur Offense” of the Chip Kelly/Mark Helfrich era to the “Gulf Coast Offense” of Taggart.

Despite having a third head coach, Herbert was a Heisman Trophy candidate in his third season. Mario Cristobal, his new head coach, taught him the pistol offence. Herbert guided the Ducks to 9–4 and a Redbox Bowl win. He had 3,151 throwing yards and 29 touchdowns. He finished second in the Pac-12 behind Gardner Minshew with 31 touchdowns. Season of 2019

Herbert returned at Oregon for his senior season despite being a high draught pick. Herbert led the Ducks to a 12–2 record, including a Rose Bowl win where he ran for three touchdowns and was named Offensive MVP. In his best statistical season, Herbert threw for 3,471 yards, 32 touchdowns, and four rushing touchdowns. Herbert won the 30th William V. Campbell Trophy, known as the “Academic Heisman,” for his on-field accomplishments.
