A two-hour debut special for Cruel Summer aired on Freeform on April 20, 2021, and the show has been a rating success ever since. The six episodes that have aired so far of the mystery series set in Skylin, Texas, have given viewers a detailed look at the events leading up to Kate Wallis’s (Olivia Holt) abduction and subsequent rescue.
Moreover, we observed how Kate’s homecoming impacted Jeanette Turner, a classmate of hers (Chiara Aurelia).
As Kate disappears, the once-nerdy next-door neighbor Jeanette becomes a social butterfly and takes Kate’s position among the “in-crowd,” even going so far as to date Kate’s boyfriend.
The mystery of Cruel Summer revolves around the circumstances behind Kate’s disappearance and the competing explanations that surface when she is found. Fans of the program will recognize the written phrase “The events that are going to unfold took place on roughly June 21, 1993, 1994, and 1995” as the opening to each episode.
The month and day are swapped around to highlight significant times throughout each of the three summers. The show raises the topic of how Jeanette moved from being the school geek to becoming the most popular girl at school and now the most reviled female in America.
The eeriness of the plot and the fact that it might happen to anybody make you wonder whether Cruel Summer is based on a real story. Fortunately, you’ve come to the right place because we do know the solution!
Is Cruel Summer Based On A True Story?
The events depicted in Cruel Summer are fictional, thankfully. Viewers sometimes question whether the program is based on true events because of the wide range of topics it covers, such as jealousy, adolescent sadness, and the need for acceptance.
Bert V. Royal, best known for penning the Off-Broadway smash Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead is the production’s screenwriter and the author of the fantasy story on which the piece is based.
To promote Cruel Summer, he spoke with Deadline about his experience working with executive producer Jessica Biel and showrunner Tia Napolitano, who has previously contributed to the Shondaland series Scandal and Grey’s Anatomy. He said,
“We’re really excited to tell this story that we hope will spark some interesting conversations about how our society can upend a person’s life and send them to the hell of infamy before — and sometimes even, despite — the facts.”
Where Does Cruel Summer Take Place?
Although it takes place in the 1990s, the program has a hip, throwback feels. There are many nostalgic touches, such as pagers, Walkmans, and dial-up internet, thanks to the show’s setting in the years 1993–1995.
Would the period matter more when the circumstances surrounding Kate’s kidnapping become clearer? As for the answer, I guess you’ll have to wait and see.

Where To Watch Cruel Summer?
Cruel Summer is now accessible to viewers all around the globe, increasing the show’s potential audience size.
The exciting series, which has been available in the US on Freeform and on Hulu streaming, is now available in the UK. As of August 6th, 2021, Cruel Summer is available on Amazon Prime, and we can almost promise that many people will soon be watching it nonstop.
But, if none of these options gets you access to Jessica Biel’s new program, a virtual private network (VPN) will let you surf the web anonymously and alter your IP address, making your mobile device, desktop computer, or laptop believe it is somewhere else entirely. In other words, you won’t have to be at home to see your favorite program or movie.
