Career and Work-Life of Maggie Haberman
To begin her career, Maggie was hired by the New York Post in 1996. After some time at the paper, in 1999 she was sent to cover City Hall for the New York Post.
She returned to the New York Post in 2008 to cover the U.S. presidential campaign and other political races after years of covering City Hall. Beginning in 2010, she worked as a senior reporter for Politico, and by 2014, she was a political analyst for CNN.
She went on to cover subsequent presidential candidates like Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump in her reporting career. With her coverage of Trump’s presidency, Haberman was awarded the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting.
The White House Correspondents Association presented her with the Aldo Beckman Memorial Award, and the Newswomen’s Club of New York honoured her with the Front Page Award for Journalist of the Year.
When Habeerman Started Working as a CNN Political Analyst?
In 1996, the New York Post hired Haberman, marking the beginning of her professional career. She became “hooked” on political reporting after being assigned to cover City Hall for the Post in 1999. For three and a half years in the early 2000s, Haberman covered City Hall for the New York Daily News, the Post’s chief rival. To cover the 2008 U.S. presidential campaign and other political races, Haberman returned to the Post. Having joined Politico in 2010, Haberman is now a senior reporter for the publication. In 2014, she started working as a CNN political analyst.
During the early months of 2015, The New York Times hired Haberman to serve as a political correspondent covering the 2016 U.S. presidential campaign. “Formed a potent journalistic tag team with Glenn Thrush,” one observer calls Haberman and Thrush.
The Fourth Estate, a documentary series by Liz Garbus, highlights her work as a White House correspondent for the Times.
Research conducted by British digital strategist Rob Blackie found that Haberman was among the most followed political writers on Twitter by members of the Biden administration.
Harberman and Trump
Haberman often broke Trump campaign and government news. “Donald Trump Expounds on His Foreign Policy Views,” Haberman and New York Times reporter David E. Sanger’s March 2016 interview with Trump, “agreed with a proposal that his principles should be summed up as ‘America First'”.
A WikiLeaks document revealed how Clinton’s team may persuade Haberman to write sympathetic stories for Politico in October 2016, one month before Trump defeated Clinton. Despite her campaign’s intentions, Haberman’s subsequent Clinton reports were significantly more negative. Haberman was accused of treating the 2016 presidential candidates’ controversies differently. “The NYT’s White House reporter labels the Clinton campaign liars, but was afraid to use that word with Trump,” Taylor Link wrote of Haberman and The New York Times’ coverage of Hillary Clinton’s email problem compared to Donald Trump’s many scandals, including sexual misconduct charges.
She was “the most-cited journalist in the Mueller report” and “the highest-profile reporter” covering Trump’s campaign and presidency. “From certain corners of the left as a supposed water carrier for the 45th president” is another accusation.
Haberman published Confidence Man: The Making of Donald Trump and the Breaking of America in 2022. CNN disclosed in advance that Trump planned to stay in the White House after his November 2020 election loss. “The New York Times’ Trump whisperer” and “far more than 600 pages of context, news and drama….it offers Trump and those close to him plenty of voice – and rope,” according to a Guardian assessment. For the week ending October 8, 2022, The New York Times nonfiction best-seller list placed the book first.
