In addition to Roberts, Ali, and Hawke, the film also features breakout star Myha’la Herrold from Bodies Bodies Bodies, as well as the ever-popular Kevin Bacon, Charlie Evans (Everything’s Going to Be Okay), and Farrah MacKenzie (Logan Lucky). Here’s all you need to know about Leave the World Behind:

A family vacation on Long Island is interrupted by two strangers bearing news of a mysterious blackout. As the threat grows more imminent, both families must decide how best to survive the potential crisis, all while grappling with their own place in this collapsing world.

With the release of 2021’s Oscar-nominated catastrophe film Don’t Look Up, Netflix has proven that it is not afraid to release blockbuster films with star-studded casts and catastrophic themes. Director and writer Adam McKay is noted for imbuing his films with a humorous tone.

Yet Sam Esmail, creator of the critically acclaimed dark thriller Mr. Robot, is behind Leave the World Behind. Compared to the lighthearted Don’t Look Up, this seems to indicate that the picture will have a darker, more realistic tone. Adapting the novel by Rumaan Alam, Esmail not only directed but also wrote the screenplay for Leave the World Behind.

It should come as no surprise that Esmail’s latest novel, Leave the World Behind, likewise deals with a technological apocalypse, in this case, a big blackout, given that his previous best-known work, Mr. Robot, centered on a mentally unstable hacker seeking to bring down the system.

The film’s potential as an awards contender for Netflix remains to be seen, but its release so late in the year suggests the streaming service is banking on it. When Leave the World Behind debuts on Netflix in 2023, viewers can look forward to a taut and thrilling thriller with a strong psychological core and very good performances from an awards-worthy cast.
