Tuesday night, the Maine State Police charged 34-year-old Joseph Eaton with murder after he was allegedly responsible for the shooting deaths of four persons and the injuries of three more.
Four victims were discovered shot to death at a home in Bowdoin, a small rural community about 30 miles northeast of Portland, where the shooting started on Tuesday morning. Later in the day, it was possible to observe hearses departing the house on a forested lot.
The shooter then started shooting on Interstate 295 about 25 miles south of Bowdoin, inflicting three injuries, one of which was critical. The location of the highway shooting was close to an off-ramp, and a car with bullet holes in the windshield was seen there.
Authorities didn’t immediately name the victims or disclose any details about the shootings’ motivation.

Before his initial court appearance later this week, Eaton, a resident of Bowdoin, was taken to Two Bridges Regional Jail.
Before police finally reopened Interstate 295 late on Tuesday afternoon, it was closed for many hours. Investigators are anticipated to investigate several scenes and speak with witnesses well into the night.
Gov. Janet Mills of Maine thanked the emergency personnel and expressed her prayers for the victims.
