It is with great sadness that we must inform you of the passing of Mark Pelini, who played offensive guard for the Nebraska Cornhuskers in the past. On Sunday, a car accident on the Indiana Toll Road claimed the lives of both the driver, Pelini, who was just 31 years old, and the passenger in his vehicle, Jillian Marian, who was also 31 years old. Jane Beecher, age 57, was a passenger in the other vehicle that was involved in the accident. She was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision. Both the driver of the second vehicle and a passenger who was riding in the backseat suffered critical injuries and were sent to a nearby hospital.
Mark Pelini is the son of Diane and Vince Pelini, as well as the nephew of Bo Pelini, a former head coach at Nebraska, and Carl Pelini, a former head coach at Florida Atlantic University. Jillian Marian reportedly taught mathematics at Hubbard High School, where she was employed by WKBN.
Pelini began his professional career in Lincoln, Nebraska, from 2005 to 2008, playing offensive guard for the Huskers. After graduating from the University of Nebraska, he spent one season playing with the Las Vegas Locomotives of the United Football League, which is no longer in existence.
He was just 31 years old at the time of his death.
After that, he moved on to a career in coaching, first in 2011 as an assistant coach at Ohio University and then serving as the head coach at Campbellsville University in Kentucky from 2012-2014. Since the beginning of this year, he had been serving Youngstown State University as an assistant offensive line coach. This position began for him in January of this year.
