The New York City metropolitan region is still being affected by the smoke from the Canadian wildfires, as a light haze is predicted to return as early as Saturday evening and last until Sunday.
However, according to Jim Connolly, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, it is anticipated to be less severe than the smoky circumstances earlier in the week, when the city’s air quality deteriorated to dangerous levels and officials were forced to take emergency action.
Through Sunday, the haze is anticipated to return. Connolly said it was difficult to predict exactly when smoky conditions would start to appear this afternoon, but by early evening, people would detect the haze more clearly.
Connolly stated, “We aren’t expecting a significant issue, just some light smoke in the area. It may become more apparent around 6, 7 o’clock tonight.”
In the metropolitan region, there will be a range of haziness, with Long Island likely to see the worst circumstances. Connolly stated that areas north of the city would experience lighter weather.

According to AirNow.gov, the air quality in New York was moderate as of 7 p.m. on Saturday. However, Connolly urged people to keep an eye on the weather over the course of the weekend to determine whether safety measures like remaining inside might be required.
