The world has lost an angel today with the passing of Olivia Newton-John, the Australian singer whose hits “Physical,” “Have You Never Been Mellow,” and “You’re the One That I Want,” a duet with John Travolta from Grease, were all number ones on the charts. Her age was revealed to be 73.
Olivia Newton-John Death
A long struggle with breast cancer claimed the life of a 73-year-old American in August.
Her husband, John Easterling, made the Facebook announcement on Monday that John had passed away at their ranch in Southern California early that morning.
“Olivia has been a symbol of triumphs and hope for over 30 years sharing her journey with breast cancer,” he wrote. “Her healing inspiration and pioneering experience with plant medicine continues with the Olivia Newton-John Foundation Fund, dedicated to researching plant medicine and cancer.”
Newton-John, who was born in England but raised in Melbourne, revealed in May 2017 that the breast cancer that had been in remission for 25 years had moved to her lower back. The singer cancelled a two-show tour in August 2018 barely three weeks after announcing it. The shows were scheduled to take place in Melbourne and Sydney, and they were intended to be retrospective conversations about her career.
Newton-John sold over 100 million records and had nearly 40 entries on the Billboard Hot 100 during her five-decade career as a country-pop and soft-rock phenomenon in the 1970s and ’80s.
Paramount’s Grease (1978) was an adaptation of the musical that debuted on Broadway in 1972 and ran for approximately 3,400 performances. After being cast as Rydell High good girl Sandy Olsson opposite Travolta as Danny Zuko, her fame skyrocketed.
To play opposite Travolta, then 23, producer Allan Carr considered Carrie Fisher (Star Wars hadn’t been released), Deborah Raffin, Susan Dey, and Marie Osmond before meeting Newton-John, then 29. Newton-John was hesitant to work with her again after the failure of her previous film, the obscure English science fiction film Toomorrow (1970).
“I was very anxious about making another film, because my music career was going well, and I did not want to mess it up by doing another movie that wasn’t good,” Newton-John told Vanity Fair in 2016.
