Pelé discussed his health before his death. After rib fractures, he had his right kidney removed in 1977. Pelé had hip surgery again in 2016. “[Pelé] took advantage of his holidays to spend time in New York with his children and grandkids and he had this modest reparatory procedure,” his press officer Pepito told Reuters at the time.
Pelé was wheelchair-bound at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in December 2017. Pelé fell and was hospitalised a month later. “In the early hours of Thursday morning, Pele fell and was brought to the hospital in Brazil where he has undergone a series of tests which appear to point to severe exhaustion,” the Football Writers’ Association stated. As a 73-year-old man, Pelé wed Marcia Aoki in 2016. Aoki, a Japanese-Brazilian who was then 41 years old, was born in Japan. Aoki is a successful businesswoman who imports medical equipment. While they did meet in the 1980s, it wasn’t until 2010 that they started dating, and in 2016 before they sealed the knot.
