Ex-wife Grace Hightower filed divorce papers in June 2019 that included extensive information on the couple’s finances and assets as part of their ongoing split from Robert.

Grace claims in her statement that Robert has a net worth of at least $500 million, with earnings of $250–$300 million between 2004 and 2018. Most of these earnings came from the growth of his Nobu restaurant chain.

Grace would be entitled to $1,000,000 every year for the number of years they were married, a $6,000,000 apartment, $500,000 in cash, and 50% of the value of their primary residence according to the prenuptial agreement the couple signed in 2004. However, Ms. Hightower filed paperwork asking for half of the actor’s income on the grounds that he hid his finances from her for over a decade.

According to court records, Robert was ordered to pay Grace $1 million in any year that his income was at least $15 million, which is most years. He would owe Grace a smaller portion of his reduced income.

Grace filed a case with the court in July 2020, claiming that Robert had unfairly reduced her monthly American Express payment from $100,000 to $50,000 as the divorce proceedings continued. In reaction, De Niro said that the COVID-19 situation had caused a collapse in his fortune.

As rumors have it, he had to borrow $500,000 to assist pay off some of Nobu’s increasing bills. His attorneys claimed a $3 million loss in April and a $1.9 million loss in May for Nobu. De Niro’s legal team also said he’d be “lucky if he makes $7.5 million” in 2020.
