The run of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings has ended, and it would be an understatement to call it anything other than a smashing success. The 25th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was a smashing success at the box office, bringing in hundreds of millions of dollars.
The action flick, starring Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, is a martial arts masterpiece that spans the globe and combines the awe of the best fantasy films with the white-knuckle thrills of the best action flicks. People have been wondering when they will get to see Marvel’s master of martial arts again after all this success and the Shang-Chi conclusion.
Since this is the MCU, we won’t be saying goodbye to Shang-Chi and his newfound archery prowess Katy (Awkwafina) anytime soon. In order to bring you the most up-to-date information on the Shang-Chi sequel, we have scoured the web, interviewed the film’s cast, and even risked the wrath of Wong by reading the banned books in the Kamar-Taj library.
Shang-Chi 2 Release Date
Shang-Chi 2 was left off of Marvel Studios’ Phase 5 and Phase 6 movie lineup announcements. In December 2021, Deadline said that production on a sequel had begun but that a release date had not been set.
The fact that only Deston Daniel Cretton, the director, has been announced as a confirmed creative on set may be to blame. Cretton will also helm Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, one of the MCU’s Phase 6 films.
Filming on Shang-Chi 2 is not likely to begin before the fifth Avengers film is completed. If the same director doesn’t take up the project, the next Shang-Chi film won’t hit theaters until 2025 or 2026 at the earliest.
Shang-Chi 2: Who Will Play?
Since they were the central characters in the first film and the ones Wong recruited to join the realm of superheroes, Simu Liu and Awkwafina’s Katy would be back for Shang-Chi 2.
The return of Michelle Yeoh as Shang-Chi’s aunt is also possible but unconfirmed at this time. Even though her brother possesses the genuine Ten Rings, Meng’er Zhang should return now that she is the leader of the MCU’s Ten Rings organization.
By making many appearances outside of the Doctor Strange trilogy, Benedict Wong has become the MCU’s connective thread. Both he and Abomination made cameos in Disney+’s She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, and his first cameo in the first Shang-Chi movie set up a fight between the two in an underground fight club for superpowered individuals, which could be resolved in the sequel.
Wong is now an essential member of the remaining Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) Avengers team. Shang-Chi’s final appearance with Wong was for Wong to quiz him and his friend Katy on the Ten Rings’ attributes. A plot involving Wong and his knowledge of magical relics could explain where the Ten Rings were first used in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The Plot of Shang-Chi 2
The story in Shang-Chi 2 is the biggest unknown. Sometimes a Marvel film will serve as a springboard for a TV series, and vice versa. There may be no connection between the events of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and the events shown in Shang-Chi 2.
Ta-Lo and the backstory of Shang-Chi’s hidden universe are two aspects that deserve more attention in the sequel. So many questions are left unresolved, and his development as a character would be greatly aided by his discovering more about his abilities outside of the Ten Rings.
