Project Rene—The Sims 5—is official. The Sims 4 sequel is in development after months of rumours.
EA’s The Sims 4 is still popular after nine years. Due to new expansions, free base game updates, and a dedicated community, the game has survived a rough 2014 launch.
EA and Maxis revealed the franchise’s future on October 18, 2022. Here is all about The Sims 5.
The Sims 5 Potential Release Date
Project Rene has been revealed, although the fifth core Sims game may not appear until 2025.
Lyndsay Pearson, VP of Franchise Creative for The Sims, announced The Sims 5 and that development would take a “few years.”
On October 18, she said, “Today signals the start of our adventure over the next few years.” The team intended to unveil the project early so Simmers could be “a part of our development journey”.
This is an intriguing idea that may help the new game avoid the contentious launch of its predecessor. Pearson also stated that The Sims 4 will receive continued support and new features.
The Sims 5 will likely be available for PC and Mac via the Origin store (and maybe Steam). Pearson indicated that the team is considering a multi-device play. “Same experience, different screens,” she said.
Project Rene game director Grant Rodiek said they want to use each platform’s strengths.
“You can have that deep dive [experience] at home on your PC, play for four hours, tweak everything about a piece of furniture you envisage… “But then, on the fly, you can grab your phone and maybe it’s a different experience,” he stated during January 2023’s Behind The Sims live.
“Maybe you’re grabbing archetypes, preselecting templates, or your own things. This means you can play The Sims anywhere, without limits.”
The PlayStation and Xbox versions of The Sims 4 arrived more than three years after the PC version, although in recent years, all platforms have had feature parity (excluding mods) and packs have been released on the same day, signalling that console versions are being taken more seriously. Thus, console users shouldn’t have to wait three years longer for The Sims 5 than PC players.
Will Nintendo Switch Get Sims 5?
The Sims 5 for Nintendo Switch is desired. EA’s poor console support makes it unlikely. Sims 4 isn’t on Switch. However, a mobile device was seen running an experimental early build of Project Rene, but we don’t know if it’s broadcast.
Might that mean the game could be played on Nintendo’s handheld? Will see.
The Sims 5 Multiplayer: Is It Confirmed?
Is The Sims 5 multiplayer? It’s controversial. Before a U-turn, many were unhappy with The Sims 4’s multiplayer plans. Project Rene has optional multiplayer. Multiplayer is yet unknown. EA and Maxis aim to give Simmers more tools than ever to cooperate on user-generated content, possibly expanding on The Sims 4’s gallery function.
Privacy options let you play alone or with close friends. An official FAQ confirms that Simmers can play single-player without multiplayer features. In January 2023’s Behind The Sims stream, Project Rene game director Grant Rodiek claimed the game is single-player and multiplayer.
“We know that our gamers want that intimate personal experience where they’re exploring tales and ideas in single-player, but there are also very exciting things you could do with others, where you could share and create with your friends, the people that you want,” he said. “The Sims 5 is not an MMO,” Rodiek said. “You can play on your own, on your terms, and then again, when you want on your terms, you can invite others to come and play.”
We expect further specifics about how everything works in the next months and years.

EA and Maxis showed out early build customization thoughts for The Sims 5 on the October 18 stream. Customize things. Bed headboards and sofa cushion shapes and positioning are examples. A colour picker lets players choose colours and patterns for different surfaces and components. A gamer rotated and positioned sofa cushions in the sneak look.
The Sims 5’s features are unknown, but we can speculate. First, The Sims 5 may be live-service.
In September 2022, industry insider Jeff Grubb claimed on his Giant Bomb podcast that a new numbered entry in the series shouldn’t start from fresh material and that EA may take a different approach for the next game.
“I think they’re ready to modify how they handle their large numbered sequels, including The Sims,” Grubb added. I think that the audience would like doing it with that game.
The Sims 4 has improved diversity and inclusiveness by providing configurable pronouns, asexual and aromantic Sims, deeper skin tones, Black hairstyles, and East Asian eye presets. The Socially Awkward attribute in the High School Years addition represents neurodiversity, and more clothes, build objects, and meals from diverse cultures have been introduced.
The franchise’s latest marketing has focused on the ‘Play with Life’ theme, so we may expect The Sims 5 to start out more inclusive. The developer has been open about technical constraints prohibiting “mechanically” non-binary Sims. Building the next game from scratch will remedy this.
Sims 4 lacks disability representation. Mobility items were “at the top of our thinking” and “at the top of our list” when the team responded to a petition in October 2021. We hope to see them again.
Players want automobiles and diversity in The Sims 4. The team responded in an Inside Maxis live in March 2021: “To introduce new material into the game, it entails many, many processes. Game creation requires time-consuming steps.
“Sometimes we need to work on core technologies, and sometimes we have to go deep into the designs to make these things happen.”
Cars may come to The Sims 4, but the great demand will have passed down to The Sims 5. Hope remains. Some fans have called for open worlds to return to The Sims 5, but nobody knows if that would mesh with the game’s core premise.
