Spike has called his 9,000-square-foot Upper East Side townhouse his primary abode since 1998. The mansion consists of two separate three-story buildings that surround a central courtyard. It’s mind-boggling how many famous people have lived at Spike Lee’s home.
In 1998, Spike paid Jasper Johns $16.62 million to purchase the property. Gypsy Rose Lee, Charles Lanier Lawrence, and Charles B. Dillingham are just a few of the prior owners.
In 1916, Mrs. William K. Vanderbilt built this mansion as a wedding present for her daughter. The house was designed by the well-known architect Frederick J. Sterner, who created a Spanish renaissance-style structure that stood out dramatically from its neighbors.
The beautiful and secluded courtyard in the middle more than made up for the building’s austere front. In 2014, Spike put the mansion up for sale at $32 million. He was unable to locate a buyer for the property, and he still has the title to it today. Zillow has a 10-year estimate for this home of $19-$90 million, but take it with a grain of salt.
Spike bought a three-story building in Brooklyn for $820,000 in 1991 to house his film production company, Forty Acres and a Mule. Identical structures on the same street currently fetch between $2 and $4 million.
Spike might be at his Martha’s Vineyard home on his two-acre estate when he’s not relaxing in New York City. Spike bought the property in 1989 for $400,000, and it is located near the 18th hole of Farm Neck Golf Club. He then constructed a mansion with four bedrooms, the current value of which is between $3 and $4 million.
