The Apothecary Diaries (Kusuriya no Hitorigoto) light novel series by Natsu Hyga and Touko Shino will be adapted into an anime series, and the official website for the project started streaming a teaser promotional video on Saturday. The video announces the October launch date and the addition of Takeo Tsuka as Jinshi to the cast.

The anime is being directed by Norihiro Naganuma (The Ancient Magus’ Bride season 1), who is also overseeing the screenplays. The assistant director is named Akinori Fudesaka. The characters are being created by Yukiko Nakatani (Go! Princess Precure, Tropical-Rouge! Precure).
The color key artist is Misato Aida (My Master Has No Tail), and the art director is Katsumi Takao (Pokémon the Movie: Secrets of the Jungle). The director of Komi Can’t Communicate is Y Nagai. The director of photography for compositing is Rumi Ishiguro.
The editor in charge is Daisuke Imai. The director of sound is Shji Hata. The anime’s soundtrack is being created by Satoru Kousaki (Vivy -Fluorite Eye’s Song-), Kevin Penkin (Made in Abyss), and Arisa Okehazama (ONIMAI: I’m Now Your Sister!).

The novel series is published digitally by J-Novel Club, which summarizes the plot as follows:
A nation controlled by an emperor in the East has a large complex known as the Hougang, or back palace, where the monarch’s consorts and female servants reside. Until she was abducted and forced into servitude at the back palace, Maomao, an inconspicuous girl raised in a quiet town by her apothecary father, never dreamed the rear palace would have anything to do with her.
Maomao possesses a quick wit, a smart mind, and a wealth of medical knowledge despite her unassuming appearance. That is her secret up until she runs across the head eunuch, Jinshi, who is at least as perceptive as she is. In order for her to test the lady’s food for poison, he sees through Maomao’s facade and appoints her a lady-in-waiting to none other than the Emperor’s favored consort!
In October 2011, Hyga started serializing the work on the “Shsetsuka ni Nar”. The first print edition featuring Shino’s illustrations was released by Shufunotomo in August 2014, and the 13th volume was delivered on February 25. The eighth volume was released by J-Novel Club on May 29.
In May 2017, Nekokurage debuted the light novel series manga adaptation in Square Enix’s Monthly Big Gangan publication. The manga’s eleventh collected book volume was released on February 25 by Square Enix. The manga adaptation is being published in English by Square Enix Manga & Books, and the manga’s eighth volume was released on July 18.
