Sheppard started practicing medicine in Gahanna, Ohio, a suburb of Columbus, after being released from prison. Even though “[his] abilities as a surgeon had deteriorated, and much of the time he was affected by alcohol,” the Youngstown Osteopathic Hospital granted Sheppard surgical privileges on May 10, 1968.
A discectomy he conducted on a woman five days after being permitted to do so resulted in the unintentional cutting of an artery, and the patient died the next day. He caused internal bleeding to kill a 29-year-old patient on August 6. A few months after the families of the individuals who had died had filed wrongful death suits, Sheppard resigned from his position at the hospital.

It was said that in the final years of his life, Sheppard would consume “as much as two-fifths of liquor a day.” Sheppard’s body was discovered in his Columbus, Ohio, home on April 6th, 1970. It was initially reported that Sheppard had died of liver failure. Wernicke encephalopathy was cited as the official cause of death. His final resting place was in Columbus, Ohio’s Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.

Marilyn Reese and Sam Sheppard had a Fourth of July party that evening in 1954 at their lakeside home in Bay View, Ohio.
Sheppard claimed that he slept off on the day bed in the living room while watching “The Strange Holiday” with his wife late that night. His wife, Marilyn, then escorted the remaining visitors to the door.
Sam heard his wife yell from the bedroom upstairs in the wee hours of July 4th morning. Sheppard claimed he would be knocked out when he entered the bedroom with a blow to the head.
Sam awoke and chased the intruder down to the beach, where a horrific incident would occur a few minutes later.
Sam called his next-door neighbor at 5:40 a.m. Blood was visible on Sam’s pant knees when they found him, and he was wearing no shirt. The authorities were about to be contacted.
Sam was taken aback by their arrival. When police arrived to his house to investigate, they discovered several high-value items had been taken.
Their kid Chip was sound asleep the whole time, and the family dog on the property did not make a peep.
There were zero telltale signs of a break-in.
As the trial progressed, it became public knowledge that Sam had been caught having an adulterous affair with Susan Hayes, a 24-year-old laboratory technician at Bayview Hospital in Bay Village. The state’s attorneys argued that the victim’s hatred for Hayes drove the crime. The perfect storm ruined Sam Sheppard’s life in more ways than one. Sheppard would “fall on the sword” at this point for his wife.
But, in 1966, the court reversed his conviction due to several legal missteps.
There was a lot of buzz around the case, and the trial was mired in controversy. Some thought Dr. Sheppard was innocent and had been wrongfully convicted, while others believed he was responsible for the crime.
Whether or not Dr. Sheppard murdered Marilyn, his wife, is a question with no clear answer. Evidence supported his possible involvement and pointed to other likely culprits. Killer identification has never occurred, and the case of Marilyn Sheppard’s murder remains unsolved.
