What Happened To John Rahm?
Now ranked first in the world, golfer Jon Rahm had to pull out of the 2023 Players Championship due to an upset stomach. Twenty minutes before his Round 2 grouping with world No. 2 Scottie Scheffler and world No. 3 Rory McIlroy, he made the announcement.
The Spaniard shot a 71 in the opening round of the Players Championship, putting him just seven shots behind the first-round leader, Chad Ramey. Rahm, who was hoping to put himself in a good position for a weekend run with a solid second round, will instead go home and recover as the PGA Tour schedule approaches significant championship season.
With three victories already in 2023, Rahm came into the week riding a high. He was the first to win three championships before March 1st since Johnny Miller in 1975. Last week, Rahm had his worst performance of the year at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, as he tied for 39th with scores of 65-76-76-72.

Even if Rahm’s next tee time is a mystery, the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play at Austin Country Club in two weeks seems like a safe bet. The 2023 Masters will be held at Augusta National, and Rahm will travel there from there.
What Does That Indicate About The World No. 1 Battle?
Because of Rahm’s withdrawal, a top-five finish by Scheffler, depending on McIlroy’s performance, could vault him back to the top of the global rankings.
Last month, the American was on top of the standings after successfully defending the WM Phoenix Open title. However, a week later, Rahm surpassed him by moving to the top after winning the Genesis Invitational.
World No. 3 McIlroy, who won The Players in 2019, battled to a four-over 76 on the first day and could finish as low as seventh and return to the top of the standings. After an opening round of 68, Scheffler was four strokes off the early lead.
Scheffler and McIlroy had opportunities to pass Rahm as world No. 1 after the Spaniard tied for 39th at the Arnold Palmer Invitational last week, his worst showing since July.
